Carl Beam is an Ojibwe artist from West Bay, Manitoulin Island. In 1975 he received his B.F.A. from the University of Victoria. Since then, he has taken some graduate studies at the University of Alberta and had a successful career as an artist. His works have been shown in numerous galleries across Canada including The National Gallery of Canada, The Canadian Museum of Civilization, The McMichael Canadian Collection, The Art Gallery of Hamilton, and The Thunder Bay Art Gallery. In 1988, his painting The North American Ice-berg gained recognition as the first Native artwork purchased by the National Gallery of Canada since 1927.
